Expanding Forms (Coast) Touch Point No.6, 1981, oil on canvas, BGT474

WBG’s first appearance at Maastricht

Arising from an enthusiastic interest in WBG’s work Waterhouse & Dodd have chosen to feature her at TEFAF, the highly important annual fair of fine art and antiques that takes place in Maastricht.  The gallery has elected to take a major painting from 1981, Expanding Forms (Coast) Touchpoint Series No.6 which will be supported by two related works on paper, a 1977 gouache that re-examines early 1950s glacier images, and a 1989 example of her Splintered Ice series. Expanding Forms (Coast) Touchpoint Series No.6 is one of Willie’s largest paintings and should make a considerable impact on the gallery’s stand.

Expanding Forms was a significant series of paintings executed between 1980 and 1981. Based on waves washing over a beach, most presumably that of Porthmeor Beach overlooked by the artist’s St Ives home and studio, the series extends two concepts – lines of energy, most clearly seen in the multitude of small drawings she made in those years characterised by tightly packed lines, and the movement of forms as expressd in the earlier series of tumbling squares and circles. The muted palette provides mood and atmosphere.

TEFAF Maastricht takes place between 10th and 19th March.  For details please contact the gallery: +44 (0)207 734 7800 / info@waterhousedodd.com .Or visit www.tefaf.com
