Travels between Cornwall and Scotland

Rachel says ‘From the moment I arrived I began to appreciate how Barnes-Graham’s travels between Cornwall and Scotland created a push and pull physically and imaginatively through her work. This connection between the two places has become mirrored in my own practice, which now has layers of Cornwall running through it wherever I make work.

When there, I spent most of my time between the studio and the South West Coast Path, and have walked from the Hayle Estuary to Lizard Point so far. These walks have become hugely influential on my drawing and etching practice, as ways to observe, physically experience and remember the dynamic flows of landscape, seascape and social history, layered with memories from elsewhere and fictional influences. The sea wall at Penzance, and the Runnel Stone (lying beneath the sea’s surface at Gwenap Head) have become metaphors as I process memories and emotional experiences through drawing and etching back in Glasgow where I am based.’
