Royal Scottish Academy | Barns-Graham Travel Award 2010
Martin used to the award used to travel to Greece to look at sites of antiquity. The trip inspired drawings and paintings of animals in ancient sites, work relating to roadside funeral monuments, and work relating to Greek mythology.
Martin says ‘The Barns-Graham Travel Award gave me the opportunity to explore and immerse myself in Athens, where my initial focus on historic monuments evolved into a deeper appreciation for the unexpected subjects and overlooked narratives of the city—its stray animals, roadside memorials, and the quiet presence of everyday life. This journey continues to shape my work and deepen my artistic exploration.’
