The Experience of a Place in an Unordinary Way
Lauren says ‘Paris was a city I had longed to visit, with its museums, architecture and painterly echoes of artists from centuries before. Travelling completely on my own was a new but amazing experience; wandering aimlessly, sketching to my heart’s content and absorbing myself in the museums and galleries for as long as I desired. I set out with few intentions each day, inspired by the Situationist’s International ‘derive’, exploring the urban space with an undirected approach. In my final year of university 2020, I had explored themes of psychogeography and the exploration of urban spaces. George Perec was a French Novelist who enhanced my understanding of psychogeography through exploring the characteristics of the experience of place in an unordinary way. I used this trip as an opportunity to retrace the steps of Perec and experience Paris in a similar way to his 47 years previous. It was an inspiring trip which has influenced my current practice in painting, drawing and printmaking.’
