Kate says ‘To receive recognition and support for my work from the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust, and to be given the opportunity to travel purely for inspiration, was the most incredible gift. The impact of the time I spent in Italy cannot be understated, it has influenced the direction of my practice for the past decade, in ways both hoped for and unexpected. The trip deepened my understanding of medieval decorative painting techniques, which I had planned to study, but also gave me a multitude of spontaneous, joyful experiences and inspired in me a love of solo travel that continues to this day.’
