International Writer's Residency at Balmungo House 2012
Booker Prize-winning author Damon Galgut spent three months in autumn 2012 as a writer in residence at Balmungo House, where he worked on his forthcoming novel, Arctic Summer (2014).
Several Unusual and Most Happy Weeks
Damon says ‘I spent several unusual and mostly happy weeks ensconced in the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham house outside St Andrews some years ago, working on a novel about E.M. Forster. The isolation was both difficult and helpful; nobody came to look for me, except a group of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and I was frequently lonely, but got an enormous amount of work done. I was (and am) grateful for the odd seclusion it opened up at just the right moment and was sad to hear that the residency had ceased to be, not long after my sojourn.’
