Alice Strang receives special award

Congratulations to our own Alice Strang, Barns-Graham Trust trustee and senior curator at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (SNGMA), who was recently made the 2016 Saltire Society Outstanding Woman of Scotland for her work on the Modern Scottish Women Artists project at the SNGMA. The SSOWS scheme aims to ‘recognise and celebrate remarkable Scottish women from all walks of life who have made an outstanding contribution to Scottish culture and society through their influence and leadership’. The critically acclaimed exhibition Modern Scottish Women Painters and Sculptors 1885-1965 was a highlight in this year’s Edinburgh visual arts calendar.

Alice says “In my acceptance speech I thanked my mother for all the nominations she submitted under different names, the artists featured in the Modern Scottish Women (MSW) exhibition, my curatorial and art historical predecessors in the field, everyone throughout and outwith the National Galleries of Scotland who brought the MSW project to fruition and accepted the award on behalf of the MSW team.”

Modern Scottish Women Painters and Sculptors 1885-1965 was supported by the Barns-Graham Charitable Trust.
