Glacier (Bone), 1950, Oil on pencil on board, Private Collection Ex Sotheby's

Important Glacier painting from Davie Bowie Collection has sold for £106,250 – A Great Price

10 November 2016 – A wonderful example of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham’s glacier paintings has sold at Sothebys this evening. The painting was part of David Bowie’s substantial art collection. Glacier (Bone) is a smaller version of the great series of glacier paintings that are distributed in public collections around the UK, including Tate, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the British Council. Others are with Wolverhampton Art and Museum Services, Sheffield  Galleries and Museum Trust, and Southampton Art Gallery.

In looking at last night’s sale http://bit.ly/2enVsDQ  it is good to see Willie in such fine company. Her peers here included the likes of William Scott, Ivon Hitchens, David Bomberg, Frank Auerbach and Alan Davie (to cite but some), and the only other St Ives painters in this section of the Bowie Collection being Winifred Nicholson, Bryan Winter and Peter Lanyon. An august group indeed. Nice to see her represented among the pick of the crop in Modern British Art.
