Wilhelmina Barns-Graham – Collage Works 1982-1993

Wilhelmina Barns-Graham’s collages have not received much attention in London though they, along with her small scale drawings, are an important aspect of her work throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Echoing the drawings, with their closely parallel lines, the process of sticking tiny pieces of paper/card in repetitive patterning can be seen as a form of meditation. The expressive movement of the overall design of the collages complements her paintings of the period though the collages have their own distinctive character. The small scale of most gives them a particular intimacy which, along with the jewel-like application of colour, gives these works their visual appeal.

An on-line catalogue of the exhibition can be seen here.
